Uganda commemorates World Tuberculosis Day

Gulu, 27th March 2015:- The World Tuberculosis (TB) day was held at the Kaunda grounds, in Gulu district under the theme “reach the 60,000, patients in Uganda” to celebrate the reductions in numbers of TB patients in Uganda. 

His Excellency the President of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in a speech read on his behalf by Hon Elioda Tumwesigye, the Minister of Health who was also the chief guest, committed governments efforts to improve access to information on Tuberculosis. He underscored government’s commitment to having TB treatment-centres all over the country. He also called on patients to adhere to advice given to them by the health workers, highlighting the need for zero TB deaths, zero TB treatment interruption and zero lost follow-ups.

The Director General of Health services Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng also appreciated the country coordinating mechanisms for focusing on population needs. She highlighted the great strides made in mobilization of TB patients. 

Dr. Abel Nkolo who represented the World Health Organization Country (WHO) Representative highlighted the need for a dedicated budget line for anti TB drugs and diagnostic equipment to boost patient follow-up and completion of treatment. 
The Gulu District Chairperson, Mr Mapinduzi Ojara also highlighted the good performance of Gulu district in fighting TB and alluded to the great performance to the efforts of Ministry of Health and the TB partners. 
Kampala, Kalangala and Gulu districts were recognized for their outstanding performances, each in fighting TB but special recognition was accorded to Kalangala district for registering  100% success rate in fighting TB. Kampala and Gulu were rewarded for most improved zone in TB control and best TB case finding rates, respectively. The function was well attended by government, CSO, religious leaders, district leaders, schools and the media.
